MetaMask Card Review: Fees, Countries, and Crypto Card Features

The MetaMask Card is one of the more unusual crypto debit cards on the market because it is built around self-custody. Instead of preloading a custodial balance, you approve supported tokens from your MetaMask wallet and the card converts them to fiat at the time of purchase.

It runs on the Mastercard network, supports Apple Pay and Google Pay, and is available as a free Virtual tier plus a paid Metal tier. As of June 3, 2026, new U.S. sign-ups are temporarily paused, and Metal orders were paused from June 2, 2026.

For the right user, that setup is genuinely useful: you keep control of your wallet until the moment you spend. But it also creates more moving parts than a standard prepaid or custodial crypto card. You need the right token on the right supported network, you need to pass full KYC, and the fee picture is not as simple as “1% cashback.”

The bottom line

MetaMask Card may suit existing MetaMask users who are already comfortable with self-custody, network selection, and token management. It is less compelling for beginners who want a simple plug-and-play crypto debit card.

The strongest parts of the product are clear:

  • Self-custodial spending
  • Mastercard acceptance
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay support
  • 1% mUSD cashback on the free tier
  • Up to 3% mUSD cashback on Metal

The trade-offs are just as clear:

  • U.S. sign-ups are paused for new applicants
  • Metal orders are paused
  • Supported countries are broad, but not global
  • Fees can stack depending on token type, cross-border use, and ATM use
  • Physical card access is tied to the Metal tier

MetaMask Card at a glance

Card Network Custody Card type
MetaMask Card Mastercard Non-custodial Virtual
Card Apple Pay Google Pay KYC
MetaMask Card Yes Yes Full

Based on our data, the core product is a non-custodial Mastercard debit card issued through Monavate, funded with crypto, with a free virtual tier and a premium Metal tier. Official MetaMask support pages also confirm Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support, full KYC, and native sign-up through MetaMask Mobile or MetaMask Portfolio for eligible users.

How MetaMask Card works

This is not a credit card. MetaMask describes it as a debit card that lets you spend assets directly from your wallet, with conversion to fiat happening when you make a purchase. You choose supported tokens, set spending limits, and delegate those assets for card use while keeping wallet control until the transaction is completed.

In practice, the setup flow looks like this:

  1. Check whether your country is eligible.
  2. Open the Card tab in MetaMask Mobile or MetaMask Portfolio.
  3. Complete KYC.
  4. Choose Virtual or Metal if eligible.
  5. Move funds to a supported network.
  6. Enable supported tokens and set spending limits.
  7. Add the card to Apple Pay or Google Pay.

That flow will feel straightforward to regular DeFi users. For newer users, it is more complex than a normal debit card because wallet funding, network choice, and token approval all matter before you can spend.

Card types: Virtual vs Metal

MetaMask currently separates the product into two tiers:

Card Annual fee Physical card Cashback
MetaMask Card Virtual $0 No 1% mUSD
MetaMask Card Metal $199 Yes 3% then 1%

Official MetaMask documentation says the Virtual card is the free tier, while Metal is the premium tier. The Metal tier includes a physical metal card, higher spending and ATM limits, no cross-border fee under standard usage, and 3% mUSD back on the first $10,000 spent each year, then 1% after that. Official support pages also state that Metal is only for U.S. users, excluding Vermont, although new U.S. sign-ups and new Metal orders are currently paused.

One important caveat: our data lists Physical card: No for the main card entry, while MetaMask’s official Metal documentation describes a physical Metal card. The most practical reading is that the standard product is virtual by default, and physical card access is tied specifically to the Metal subscription. Users should verify the current fulfillment status before applying.

MetaMask Card fees

Fees are where the MetaMask Card becomes less intuitive than its marketing summary.

Card Monthly fee FX fee ATM fee
MetaMask Card $0 min. From 0.5% From 2%
Use case Free tier Metal tier Notes
Annual subscription $0 $199 Tier-based
Cross-border 1% 0% Fair-use note
ATM withdrawal 2% 0% up to $1,200/mo Then 2%
Other crypto spend 0.875% 0.875% Example: wETH

MetaMask’s current fee page shows:

  • Free tier annual fee: $0
  • Metal annual fee: $199
  • Stablecoin mismatch fee: 0.5% in certain cases
  • Other crypto fee: 0.875%
  • Free tier ATM fee: 2%
  • Metal ATM fee: no fee up to $1,200 per month, then 2%
  • Free tier cross-border fee: 1%
  • Metal cross-border fee: no fee, subject to fair usage
  • Typical network gas: small and variable, with Linea shown at around $0.01 in the help documentation

The important takeaway is simple: the headline cashback rate does not tell the full story. If you spend unsupported token types, use ATMs, or make cross-border transactions on the free tier, fees can reduce or wipe out much of the reward value.

Rewards, cashback, and yield

Card Base cashback Max cashback Paid in
MetaMask Card 1% 3% mUSD

Based on our data, cashback is paid in mUSD, with a listed cashback cap of $25 per month on the database side. The same data also shows a 2% to 4% savings APY range sourced from DeFi. MetaMask’s official card documentation clearly confirms the 1% Virtual reward and 3% on the first $10,000 yearly spend, then 1% for Metal, but it does not present the savings APY in the same way on the core card pages. That APY figure should be treated as product-linked ecosystem yield, not as a standard debit-card savings feature.

For most readers, the cashback math matters more than the headline maximum:

  • The Virtual card is easier to justify if you already use MetaMask and just want a spending rail.
  • The Metal card makes more sense only if you expect enough annual spending to offset the $199 fee.

Supported countries and availability

Availability is one of the biggest things to check before you go further.

Card U.S. EEA LATAM
MetaMask Card Yes, paused for new sign-ups Yes Limited

MetaMask’s official eligible-country list currently includes countries such as the United States (excluding Vermont), United Kingdom, Canada, a wide set of European markets, and a smaller list of Latin American and other jurisdictions including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, and Uruguay, among others. Official support pages also state that if you are outside an eligible country, you can join a waitlist instead of signing up directly.

Based on our data, the supported-country list is somewhat broader in Latin America than the current official eligible-country list shown on MetaMask support. That creates a live verification issue. If you are in a market such as Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, or Guyana, availability should be checked directly before publication or sign-up.

The clearest current availability points are:

  • New U.S. sign-ups paused: since June 3, 2026
  • Existing U.S. cardholders unaffected
  • Vermont excluded
  • Metal only intended for U.S. users
  • Not globally available

Supported networks and tokens

MetaMask Card does not let you spend every token in your wallet. It supports a specific set of networks and assets.

Network Example supported assets Status
Linea mUSD, USDC, USDT, wETH Supported
Solana USDC, USDT Supported
Base USDC, USDT, aBasUSDC Supported
Monad USDC Supported

MetaMask’s official guides list these supported combinations:

  • Linea: mUSD, USDC, USDT, wETH, EURe, GBPe, aUSDC, amUSD
  • Solana: USDC, USDT
  • Base: USDC, USDT, aBasUSDC
  • Monad: USDC

There is also a state-level restriction in the U.S. Official MetaMask support says users in New York and Texas have a narrower network set than many other users. The help pages consistently show Linea access, while current official pages also show Base support in those states; older internal data may not always reflect that distinction cleanly, so it is worth checking the live support page if that applies to you.

Apple Pay and Google Pay support

Yes, MetaMask Card supports both Apple Pay and Google Pay. MetaMask’s help documentation says eligible users can add the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for immediate spending, and the Metal documentation says new Metal customers receive a digital version first so they can start using it before the physical card arrives.

This is one of the stronger parts of the product because it makes a wallet-native crypto card usable in the same way as a typical mobile wallet card for in-store tap-to-pay.

KYC, residency, and onboarding

MetaMask Card is not anonymous. It requires full KYC.

Official onboarding documentation says sign-up includes:

  • Email and password
  • Phone confirmation
  • Identity verification
  • Personal information processed through Crypto Life during the KYC flow

That means the product is self-custodial on the wallet side, but still operates with a regulated card onboarding process. Readers looking for a no-KYC crypto card should not expect that here.

Spending limits and ATM limits

Tier Card tx limit Daily spend limit ATM daily limit
MetaMask Card Free $10,000 $15,000 $1,000
MetaMask Card Metal $20,000 $30,000 $5,000

MetaMask’s live limits page currently shows:

  • Free tier: $10,000 per transaction, $15,000 per day
  • Metal tier: $20,000 per transaction, $30,000 per day
  • Free ATM: $1,000 per transaction and $1,000 per day
  • Metal ATM: $1,000 per transaction and $5,000 per day

For most users, the more practical limit is not the headline card cap. It is whether ATM access matters, because non-U.S. virtual users do not get the same ATM functionality.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Self-custodial design: funds stay in your wallet until spending.
  • Mastercard acceptance: broadly usable for everyday purchases.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: good mobile-wallet support.
  • Free Virtual tier: no annual fee on the base card.
  • Rewards: 1% on Virtual, higher promo structure on Metal.

Cons

  • Availability friction: not global, with U.S. sign-ups currently paused.
  • Fee layering: cross-border, ATM, token-type, and mismatch fees can add up.
  • Complex setup: network and token management is more involved than a standard debit card.
  • Metal access limits: physical card benefits are tied to a U.S.-only premium tier, and orders are paused.
  • KYC required: not suitable for users seeking a minimal-onboarding product.

Is MetaMask Card worth it?

If you already use MetaMask regularly and like the idea of spending directly from a self-custodied wallet, the MetaMask Card is one of the more interesting products in this category. The design is more native to onchain users than many custodial crypto cards.

If you are mainly looking for simplicity, though, the card has obvious friction:

  • eligibility depends on your country,
  • token support is selective,
  • KYC is mandatory,
  • and the fee model needs close reading.

The free Virtual card is the easiest version to justify. The Metal tier is more niche, especially with the current pause on new U.S. sign-ups and Metal orders.
